RESUMPTION OF THE CENTRAL AREA TRANSIT(CAT) FREE BUS SERVICE IN THE GEORGE TOWN CITY CENTRE,PULAU PINANG
Introduction
The Central Area Transit(CAT) Bus Service was introduced since 23rd February 2009 to improve the quality of life and work within the city as well as reduce air,and noise pollution, wastage of fuel(petrol and diesel) and traffic congestion.In addition , the CAT Bus Service is needed to encourage and increase the use of public transport service in Pulau Pinang.
Details Of The '"CAT" Bus Services
The features of the CAT Bus Service provided by the Council are as follows(pamphlets attached):-
- No bus fares charged,
- The Bus route is from Pengkalan Weld(Ferry) to KOMTAR a distance of 8 km((to and fro) with19 bus stops covering an area of 1 sq.km'
- The bus service is provided from 6.00 a.m. To 12.00 midnight daily including weekends and public holidays
- 3 buses are used to provide the service at an interval of average 20 minutes.
- The buses used are of the low floor type with a length of 10 metres.All buses are air conditioned and seats are provided for the disabled,
- The buses have a capacity of 49 passengers with 29 sitting passengers and 20 standing passengers.
Three Rapid Penang Buses which are used for the CAT service were given a new look with pictures on the buses to distinguish them from the other buses.

The Shutle Bus route is as follows: -
